EV Charger Questions
Do I need a permit for an EV charger?
A new residential EV charging circuit or hardwired charger is generally subject to the electrical permitting and inspection requirements of the jurisdiction where the property is located. The exact process varies by county, independent city, town and project scope. Auto Charge Pros confirms the jurisdiction and can handle applicable electrical permitting when included in the project.
Will my electrical panel support an EV charger?
That depends on available electrical capacity and existing household demand—not simply the number of open breaker spaces. Auto Charge Pros evaluates the electrical system and completes the appropriate load calculation when needed or required before recommending charging output.
Do I need a 200-amp electrical service?
Not necessarily. Many homes can support useful Level 2 charging without upgrading to a 200-amp service. When available capacity is limited, possible options can include reduced charging output, compatible load management or other electrical solutions before a service upgrade is recommended.
Do I need a panel upgrade?
Not automatically. A full panel, limited breaker space and insufficient electrical service capacity are different problems. A subpanel may solve a breaker-space issue, while load management or reduced charging output may address capacity limitations. A panel or service upgrade should be recommended only when the electrical system actually requires it.
Can I charge at 48 amps?
Many compatible hardwired Level 2 chargers can operate at 48 amps when installed on an appropriately designed 60-amp dedicated circuit and when both the vehicle and home's electrical capacity support that output. Not every home or vehicle needs or supports 48-amp charging.
Tesla Wall Connector or NEMA 14-50?
For a permanent high-output home charging installation, Auto Charge Pros generally prefers hardwired equipment. A Tesla Wall Connector can support up to 48-amp charging when properly configured and supported by the electrical system. A 50-amp NEMA 14-50 circuit supports up to 40 amps of continuous EV charging and can be useful when compatible plug-in equipment or portability is important.
Do you install Tesla Wall Connectors?
Yes. Auto Charge Pros is a Tesla Certified Installer and installs Tesla Wall Connectors and Universal Wall Connectors throughout Northern Virginia. Nick Wilson, a Virginia Master Electrician, personally performs the electrical installation.
What other chargers do you install?
Auto Charge Pros installs compatible Level 2 charging equipment for Tesla, ChargePoint, Emporia, BMW, GM, Rivian-compatible equipment and other listed residential chargers. The circuit is designed around the actual charger specifications and available electrical capacity.
How much does EV charger installation cost?
Installation cost depends on the electrical panel, available capacity, circuit distance, wiring route, charger output, finished-space access, outdoor or detached-garage routing, permitting, load management and drywall restoration. Auto Charge Pros reviews the actual project before providing a written estimate.
How long does EV charger installation take?
Many straightforward installations can be completed during one installation visit. Longer concealed routes, panel work, load-management equipment, electrical corrections, permitting, inspections or drywall restoration can add additional steps. The expected process is explained before work is scheduled.
Can you install from a basement electrical panel?
Yes. Basement-to-garage installations are common. The route depends on framing direction, finished ceilings and walls, available unfinished spaces, circuit distance and garage location.
Can you install an outdoor charger or charger in a detached garage?
Yes, when the property and electrical system support the installation. Outdoor and detached-garage projects require evaluation of circuit distance, weather exposure, wiring method, physical protection and any existing feeder supplying the detached structure.
Do you repair drywall?
Drywall access may be necessary for concealed wiring. Expected openings are discussed before installation whenever practical. Where included in the written estimate, removed drywall can be fastened back after the required electrical work and inspection. Full finishing—including tape, compound and sanding—is available separately when requested.

How Do EV Charger Permits Differ Across Northern Virginia?
Loudoun County
Applicable residential permits and inspection requests are processed through Loudoun County's LandMARC system.
Fairfax County
Permit and inspection requirements vary by jurisdiction and project scope. Auto Charge Pros confirms the applicable process for the actual property and work being performed. For applicable Fairfax County single-family projects, the electrical permit is submitted through PLUS; separate plan requirements depend on the actual scope.
Prince William County
For residential EV charging systems greater than 20 amps, Prince William County currently requires manufacturer installation instructions and a Residential Load Calculation Worksheet that includes the EV charging load at 125% of nameplate rating.
Fauquier County
Fauquier County handles applicable residential electrical work through its trade-permit process. Requirements depend on the actual work being performed.
Incorporated towns and independent cities can have different requirements. Auto Charge Pros confirms the actual property jurisdiction rather than relying only on the mailing city.

What is the difference between a panel replacement and a service upgrade?
A panel replacement changes the distribution equipment. A service upgrade increases or modifies the electrical service supplying the home and can involve service conductors, meter/service equipment, disconnects, grounding, utility coordination and other work. Installing a new 200-amp-rated panel alone does not automatically create a 200-amp service.
Why does my breaker keep tripping?
Possible causes include circuit overload, short circuit, ground fault, connected-equipment problems, wiring conditions or breaker/panel issues. The circuit should be diagnosed before assuming the breaker itself is defective.
Can I just install a larger breaker?
No. Breaker amperage must be appropriate for the circuit conductors, equipment and design. Installing a larger breaker simply to stop tripping can remove the protection the circuit was designed to provide.
Why are some outlets dead?
The problem can originate at the affected receptacle, an upstream GFCI, another device, a connection, the branch-circuit wiring or the breaker. Electrical troubleshooting follows the circuit to identify where power is being lost.
What is the difference between GFCI and AFCI?
GFCI protection primarily addresses ground-fault shock hazards. AFCI protection detects certain hazardous arcing conditions. Depending on the circuit and location, both protections can apply.
Do older homes automatically need electrical upgrades?
No. Existing equipment should be evaluated based on condition, compatibility, capacity and the work being performed. Age alone does not mean an electrical panel, breaker or wiring system needs replacement.
Do I need whole-home surge protection?
Whole-home surge protection can help limit transient voltage reaching equipment throughout the electrical system. Under the current code cycle, surge protection is also required for dwelling services in applicable service-equipment work. The correct SPD arrangement depends on the electrical system and project.
Can you install new outlets, switches, dimmers or lighting?
Yes. Auto Charge Pros installs residential receptacles, switches, dimmers, lighting and compatible controls. New locations may require circuit evaluation and wiring through finished walls or ceilings, while direct device replacement can be much more straightforward.

What photos should I send for an EV charger estimate?
Send a clear photo of the electrical panel with the door open, a photo of the proposed charger location, and the charger or vehicle model. Wider photos showing the approximate route are helpful for basement panels, outdoor charging locations and detached garages.
Can you provide a virtual estimate?
Many projects can begin with photos and project information. If the wiring route, electrical capacity or property conditions cannot be determined reliably from photos, Auto Charge Pros may recommend an on-site visit before preparing the final scope.
Are estimates transparent?
Written estimates describe the included work and major project assumptions. Permits, load-management equipment, panel work, outdoor routing and drywall restoration should be identified separately when they apply rather than appearing as surprise additions later.
Can I pull the permit myself?
Permit responsibility can depend on the jurisdiction and project. When Auto Charge Pros is handling the permit, that responsibility is included in the written scope. If a homeowner wants to act as the permit applicant where legally allowed, the process and responsibilities should be confirmed before work begins.
Is the installation or repair warranted?
Auto Charge Pros provides a one-year workmanship and installed-materials warranty on covered installation and repair work. Equipment such as EV chargers, breakers, alarms or other devices may also carry separate manufacturer warranties.
