GFCI and AFCI Do Different Jobs

GFCI is ground-fault and shock protection. AFCI is arc-fault protection. A circuit breaker still provides overcurrent protection; AFCI is not general overload protection.

GROUND-FAULT PROTECTION

GFCI protection monitors current leaving and returning through the circuit and quickly interrupts power when it detects an imbalance consistent with current flowing through an unintended path. Its primary purpose is personnel protection from ground-fault shock hazards.

AFCI

ARC-FAULT PROTECTION

AFCI protection is designed to detect electrical characteristics associated with certain dangerous arcing conditions that conventional overcurrent protection may not detect quickly enough.

Where both ground-fault and arc-fault protection apply, compatible dual-function AFCI/GFCI protection can provide both functions in one listed device or breaker configuration.

GFCI & AFCI Requirements Under Virginia's Current Code Cycle

Virginia currently uses the 2021 Virginia code cycle referencing the 2020 National Electrical Code.

The 2020 NEC expanded dwelling-unit GFCI requirements to include 125-volt through 250-volt receptacles in specified locations. It also expanded GFCI coverage in areas such as dwelling-unit basements.

Examples of residential locations where GFCI protection commonly applies include:

  • Bathrooms
  • Garages
  • Outdoor receptacles
  • Basements
  • Laundry areas
  • Kitchen and sink-related locations
  • Other wet or damp locations covered by the applicable code

AFCI protection generally applies to applicable 120-volt 15- and 20-amp branch circuits supplying outlets or devices in areas such as:

  • Kitchens
  • Family rooms
  • Dining rooms
  • Living rooms
  • Bedrooms
  • Dens
  • Recreation rooms
  • Closets
  • Hallways
  • Laundry areas
  • Similar dwelling areas

These examples are not a substitute for evaluating the actual circuit and project. Requirements depend on voltage, circuit type, location, existing conditions, project scope and applicable code provisions.

An Older Home Does Not Automatically Need Every Circuit Rebuilt

Current electrical codes establish requirements for new work and can also trigger protective upgrades when certain circuits are added, extended, modified or replaced. That does not mean every existing circuit in an older home automatically has to be converted to current GFCI or AFCI protection simply because the code has changed since the home was built.

Some Circuits Need Both GFCI and AFCI Protection

A circuit can fall within both GFCI and AFCI requirements. Kitchen, laundry and basement circuits are examples where both forms of protection can apply depending on the specific circuit and equipment.

Possible solutions can include:

  • Compatible dual-function circuit breakers
  • Another listed combination of AFCI and GFCI protective devices
  • Circuit-specific solutions based on the existing wiring and panel

A GFCI receptacle does not automatically provide AFCI protection, and an AFCI breaker does not automatically provide GFCI protection.

Breaker Protection or Device Protection?

GFCI protection can often be provided at a receptacle or at the circuit breaker, depending on the circuit and installation. AFCI protection also has specific permitted methods, including breaker-based protection and certain outlet branch-circuit AFCI configurations when the wiring method and code conditions allow it.

The correct method depends on the existing circuit, panel compatibility, accessibility, wiring arrangement and scope of work.

A Device That Keeps Tripping Should Be Diagnosed

Repeated AFCI or GFCI operation does not automatically mean the protective device is defective. The device may be detecting an actual electrical condition.

Possible causes can include:

  • Connected appliance or equipment fault

  • Loose connection
  • Neutral wiring problems
  • Shared-neutral conditions
  • Moisture
  • Arc-fault conditions
  • Device or breaker failure

Replacing protective equipment with a standard breaker or ordinary receptacle simply to stop the tripping is not an appropriate repair when the protection is required.

07 / shared neutrals

Shared Neutrals Can Complicate AFCI and GFCI Protection

Some existing branch circuits use multiwire or shared-neutral arrangements. AFCI and GFCI devices monitor circuit current in specific ways, so neutral routing and circuit configuration must be compatible with the protection being installed.

Improper neutral connections or neutral sharing can cause protective devices to trip or prevent the installation from operating as intended.

Not every shared-neutral circuit is defective. The circuit needs to be evaluated according to its actual configuration and required protection.

GFCI Receptacle Replacement and Upgrades

A GFCI receptacle can protect itself and, when correctly wired, can also provide downstream protection to additional receptacles on the load side.

GFCI installation in Northern Virginia homes may involve a new device in a bathroom, garage, kitchen or other covered location, or GFCI outlet replacement when an existing device fails.

Before replacement, evaluate:

  • Line/load identification
  • Circuit grounding
  • Downstream devices
  • Box condition
  • Conductor condition
  • Location requirements
  • Test/reset accessibility
  • Device rating

Incorrect line/load connections or wiring problems should be corrected rather than simply installing a new device over the existing problem.

AFCI Breaker Installation and Troubleshooting

AFCI breakers must be compatible with the electrical panel and appropriate for the circuit being protected.

AFCI breaker replacement and AFCI troubleshooting should account for the circuit, panel, neutral arrangement and diagnostic indications rather than treating the breaker as an isolated part.

Evaluate:

  • Panel manufacturer and approved breaker type

  • Branch-circuit neutral
  • Shared-neutral conditions

Replacing an AFCI breaker with a standard breaker simply because the AFCI trips can remove required protection without correcting the underlying electrical problem.

10 / dual-function breakers

When a Dual-Function AFCI/GFCI Breaker Makes Sense

A dual-function breaker combines arc-fault and ground-fault protection for circuits where both are required and where the panel and circuit configuration support that equipment.

Advantages can include:

  • Both protections at the panel
  • Centralized test/reset location
  • Reduced need for separate protective receptacles on some circuit designs
  • Cleaner protection strategy where compatible

Dual-function breakers are not always the best solution. The circuit and panel configuration determine the appropriate method.

Renovations Can Trigger Current Protection Requirements

Adding or extending circuits during a remodel can create requirements that did not apply when the original home was built. Kitchens, finished basements, laundry areas, bedrooms and other renovated spaces should therefore be evaluated based on the new work being performed.

The objective is not to rebuild unrelated portions of the home unnecessarily. The protection should match the circuit and scope of work.

GFCI Protection and EV Charging Receptacles

The 2020 NEC requires receptacles installed for EV charging to have GFCI protection. This is particularly important for NEMA 14-50 and other receptacle-based charging installations.

Hardwired EV charging equipment follows a different installation arrangement because there is no charging receptacle between the branch circuit and EV charging equipment.

Do GFCI or AFCI Upgrades Require a Permit?

Permit requirements depend on the jurisdiction and scope. A straightforward protective-device replacement may be treated differently from installing a new circuit, extending branch-circuit wiring, remodeling a room or modifying the electrical panel.

When permitting is required and included in the project scope, Auto Charge Pros handles the applicable electrical permit process and coordinates inspection.

What if Circuit Corrections Require Access?

Most GFCI and AFCI device replacements can be performed from accessible panels, boxes and devices. If troubleshooting identifies a concealed wiring problem, limited drywall access may occasionally be necessary.

Any required access is discussed before opening finished surfaces whenever practical. Drywall restoration depends on the written repair scope and is not automatically included with every GFCI or AFCI service.

What is the difference between GFCI and AFCI?

GFCI protection primarily protects people against ground-fault shock hazards. AFCI protection detects certain hazardous arcing conditions associated with electrical fire risk.

Do some circuits require both?

Yes. Depending on the location and circuit, both AFCI and GFCI protection can apply. Dual-function devices are one possible method when compatible with the installation.

Why does my GFCI keep tripping?

Possible causes include equipment leakage, moisture, wiring problems, neutral issues, ground faults or a failed device. The cause should be diagnosed before the protection is removed or bypassed.

Why does my AFCI breaker keep tripping?

AFCI operation can result from actual arcing conditions, wiring problems, connected equipment, neutral issues or breaker problems. Troubleshooting should determine the cause before replacement.

Can I replace an AFCI breaker with a standard breaker?

Not simply to stop tripping. If AFCI protection is required for the circuit, the completed repair should maintain the applicable protection.

Does every older house need AFCI breakers everywhere?

No. Current requirements depend on the circuit, location and work being performed. Existing installations are not automatically converted throughout the entire home solely because newer code editions require additional protection for new work.

Do garage outlets require GFCI protection?

GFCI protection applies to receptacles in garages under the current code requirements. The exact circuit and equipment should still be evaluated for the installation.

Do basement outlets require GFCI protection?

The 2020 NEC expanded dwelling-unit GFCI protection to basement receptacles, including finished basement areas.

Does a NEMA 14-50 EV outlet require GFCI protection?

Yes. Receptacles installed for EV charging require GFCI protection under the current NEC requirements referenced by Virginia.
